that building appears clearly in pre-1945 photos, although the Amis did add a side wing onto it, post-1945. I have been told that they left this building because they said it was built by the Americans, not the Nazis. In fact, they actually left the side building of the Platterhof, the so-called Terrassenbau (it was used as a restaurant by AFRC, I think the Skyline Room or something like that). The current destructions are apparently aimed at removing Third Reich associations, not Ami associations.

I'm sure the Kehlsteinhaus will remain, because the Bavarian government makes a ton of money off it. This is the only place around there that I have seen an eagle/swastika insignia still left (although the swastika was chiseled out) - never saw anything like that at the Kehlsteinhaus. This will likely also be torn down, although it may be sold to some private purchaser. The previous AFRC HQs at the former Kanzlei compound in Stanggass is locked up and abandoned, and overgrown with weeds. The only thing they have retained is the Goellhauesl/Dietrich-Eckart-Haus, now called the Hinterbrand Lodge, a getaway for youth groups. Somewhere, I have a stone from the Berghof.Īnd the Kehlsteinhaus will remain? The entrance has (had?) the only swastika-bearing eagle I ever saw in Germany in the early eighties.ĪFRC left Berchtesgaden about Sept. Are the Bavarians tearing it down to expunge Nazi associations, or Ami? So there's no more AFRC at B'gaden? I have fond memories of the Platterhof, even before it was the General Walker. Anyone out there have any info on the Reidl Zipf KZ in Upper Austria? I will have to make a point of visiting Obersalzberg/Berchtesgaden ASAP before it is no more. I did manage to get to see Adoflf's House at Braunnau, and the Memorial to the Gusen Concentration camp victims who died at the sattelite Camp at Reidl Zipf. Unfortunately it was closed to the public over the winter months. I was over in Austria staying at my friends place near Salzburg in January this year, and enquired about a visiting the site. Thanks for the info: I have always meant to visit Berchtesgaden at some time. I have no doubt that historians 100 years from now will look back and say that what was done starting in 2000 was the wrong decision. I can understand the need to control the site in some way, and preclude the little shrines that appear at the Berghof and Kampfhauesl sites, but I am convinced that destruction of these historic remains is not the way to go. These may end up being torn down too, who knows. The government seems reluctant to sell any of these sites to private buyers. The Dietrich Eckart Krankenhaus is unused (although apparently still maintained). The small Kanzlei compound near Berchtesgaden remains empty and overgrown, as does the Berchtesgadener Hof hotel in town. The only remaining ruins of Hitler's Berghof, the retaining wall in the rear, will be covered over, and the site will be made a straight slope with the natural hill, and replanted, so that there will be no trace of the Berghof aboveground there. Of course, there are so many ruins in the woods around there that they will probably never take them *all* out, but it seems that most of what is now left will be gone. I even heard there were plans to tear down the huge Koksbunker ruin. Rumor says that even the Gutshof will be torn down, and maybe replaced by a modern facility, even though it is a successful restaurant, golf club, and ski club right now. The Hintereck cafe and kiosk will be torn down, and the Kehlsteinhaus bus ticket house will be moved over to that side of the parking lot. Within the next five years, it is probable that a new hotel will be built beside the site of Goering's Landhaus - the hotel location is already staked out. When the building ruins and basements have been removed, these will be sealed and filled over, and replanted. Several tunnel systems that are not on any known map have come to light. Some interesting finds have been made in tunnels that were previously blocked off by bomb hits in April 1945, and inaccessible since. Now they are tearing out all remaining ruins of the SS-Kaserne, Kindergarten, and Modellhaus/Film Archiv. Walker) hotel, and the ruins of the Platterhof garage. Last year they tore down the perfectly-good Platterhof (Gen. The Bavarian government is hard at work to (apparently and allegedly) remove the majority of traces of the Third Reich there. If you have been planning to visit the site of Hitler's alpine home on the Obersalzberg, above Berchtesgaden, better make it quick.
